Sochi Luge

The Sochi Olympics began with much fanfare this week, and while a good amount of attention has been focused on the inconveniences facing visitors to Sochi, The New York Times has created a fantastic interactive multimedia feature on the new track design for the luge and other sled events. Following the death of an athlete at the Vancouver Games where luge speeds reached almost 100 m.p.h., track designers needed to keep speeds down and athletes safe. The mix of full motion video, stunning photography and 3D animation of the Sochi luge track add up to a wonderfully informative experience.

While you’re there, check out the slopestyle interactive feature as well!
