Iouri Podladtchikov wowed the world when he took top honors at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and earned the gold medal in men’s halfpipe. Iouri, also known as “iPod,” has been a contender on the halfpipe competition circuit for years, but his performance in Sochi was a defining moment for him and pipe competition in general as he unseated U.S. olympian and international personality Shaun White, who was the favorite to win. He’s probably most famous for being the first rider to perform a “Cab double cork 1440°” in a halfpipe competition, a move he called the “YOLO Flip” meaning You Only Live Once.

The Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung published an online e-book, You Only Fly Once, incorporating text, video, photography, animation and a great interactive exploration of his signature move.
